"If we want to find safe alternatives to obstetrics, we must rediscover midwifery. To rediscover midwifery is the same as giving back childbirth to women. And imagine the future if surgical teams were at the service of the midwives and the women instead of controlling them."

Midwife Amy

I remember in my first ever placement as a student, the midwives I worked with were in a team called Calder Midwives, and when they answered the phone and said "Calder midwives" it sounded just like they were saying call the midwives. The dream of being a midwife who jumps on their bike and rides through the streets of old London is real for many of us, but I think riding on my bike up and down the coastal road might be another thing all together! When I answer the phone I always say "midwife Amy" so it seemed a natural choice of name for my website, it's even more of a thing now since everyone is constantly trying to say my name back to me in a matching Yorkshire accent!

Being a midwife is just part of who I am, I was working towards my midwifery training for many years before I was able to start uni, I was busy raising my own babies and volunteering as a breastfeeding supporter so when I finally started uni it was literally a dream come true for me. I have worked in all areas of midwifery which includes community, labour ward, postnatal ward, birth centres and I spent 1 wonderful year as a homebirth midwife where I really found my calling. Home is where I birthed 2 of my own babies and where I feel the most able to support women with my true midwifery skills. At home you see birth unfold in a totally different way to other areas and it is a real joy to watch. That being said, I support women|wāhine to birth wherever they choose, my role is  to support people to make their own decisions, guiding them through this journey with all the knowledge I have gained but not to tell them what decisions to make themselves.

After the birth of my 3rd child I encapsulated my own placenta and made a few smoothies, now before you feel too horrified, it really isn't as gross as it sounds. Eating my placenta in this way was really eye opening for me as the benefits were so obvious and I became a real advocate for it. I started by convincing all my friends to let me prepare their placentas and eventually I become a qualified Placenta Remedy Specialist with IPEN (The Independent Placenta Encapsulation Network). I really love placentas and I love the powerful healing benefits they harness.

I decided midway through my midwifery training that the free antenatal education (in the UK) was really lacking what I felt families needed. As a midwife I had limited time to discuss preparing for labour and birth, so I trained as a hypnobirthing teacher with KGH. Now I offer group and private hypnobirthing classes as well as non-hynobirthing antenatal classes and a prep for parenthood class. Throughout antenatal care with me I can teach and share many things but for people wanting as much knowledge as they can get their hands on, an antenatal course is next level.

My biggest passion in midwifery is informed choice. You will never hear me utter the word "allow", it just isn't in my vocabulary. My job is to support you through your journey, helping you figure it out along the way.
